Yılmaz, a former Ambassador, is a Member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey from Ardahan. He was taken hostage in June 2014, when he was the Consul General of Turkey in Mosul and held for 101 days by ISIS.

In June 2016, the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) announced the development of a technological solution, “eGLYPH”, that will allow Internet and social media companies to quickly remove extremist content from their platforms.
Late in the evening on 15 July, an attempted coup d’état was initiated in Turkey by a faction within the Turkish Armed Forces. Within less than 24 hours, the attempt to overthrow the government had failed, leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured in its wake.
