Dr. Samir Amghar

Senior Fellow


Samir Amghar is a sociologist and political expert on issues concerning Islam in Europe, political Islam and radicalization. He is currently Faculty Member of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and Associate Research Fellow at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. He is also a lecturer in political science at the Strasbourg University and at the Catholic University in Lyon. Amghar has a bachelor degree from the Université de Bourgogne, a masters degree in Political Science from the Sorbonne in Paris and a degree in Arabic from the Institut nationale des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris. He also obtained a PhD in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He was previously Associate Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (Bruxelles), at the European Union of Institute for Security Studies (Paris), Postdoctoral Fellow at the Université de Montreal and at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi and Political Analyst on North African issues within the French Ministry of Defence. He has authored several books including "Salafisme d'aujourd'hui" (Michalon, 2011), "Les islamistes au défi du pouvoir" (Michalon, 2012) and "L'islam militant en Europe" (Infolio, 2013). He has edited "European Islam : The Challenges for Society and Public Policiy" (Ceps edition, 2007). He has written for academic journals such as The Journal of Muslims in Europe, Mediterranean Politics and Critique Internationale. He has also written for Le Monde, le Figaro, le Quotidien, le Monde diplomatique. He is a regular consultant for the French and Belgian Parliament and for national and international media
