Fostering Integration, Preventing Radicalisation

On 13th March 2017, EFD hosted a discussion entitled “Fostering Integration, Preventing Radicalisation“ at Schulzentrum Walle in Bremen. EFD Senior Policy Advisor Ahmad Mansour discussed the intercultural challenges that are prevalent in schools all over Germany and how to best address these structural developments with the Chairwoman of the Integration Council of Bremen, Libuše Černá, and the headmaster of Schulzentrum Walle, Matthias Möller.

Mansour explained how teachers all over Germany as well as other European countries are struggling with the distinction between student’s free practice of religion and early signs of radical tendencies. Headmaster Möller expressed his regret about the indignation of other schools to discuss this sensitive matter and presented the approaches his school is undertaking to tackle extremism of all kinds and promote democracy education. Černá criticised the lack of institutional support for the schools from education authorities and cautioned against repeating the same mistakes that were made in integration policy over the past years.

About European Foundation for Democracy

The European Foundation for Democracy (EFD) is a Brussels and Berlin-based policy institute that has been working with civil society, academic, governmental and other stakeholders on the prevention of radicalisation for more than a decade. Through our work with these organisations and groups, EFD’s goal is to ensure that the universal values of the Enlightenment – political pluralism, respect for individual rights, government by democracy – remain the founding precepts of European security and prosperity.
