Radicalisation prevention: empowering young people

On 8 September 2016, the European Foundation for Democracy hosted a public conference in collaboration with the PeaceJam Foundation and Beatriz Becerra Basterrechea MEP, at the European Parliament in Brussels. The guest speakers were Dr. Demir Murat Seyrek, Senior Policy Advisor at the European Foundation for Democracy, Dawn Engle, Executive Director and Co-founder of the PeaceJam Foundation, Rodrigo Ballester, member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, Karin Heremans, Co-chair of Radicalisation Awareness Network, RAN Education Working Group (RAN EDU), Alexandra Antoniadis, Head of the Fight against Terrorism Sector at the European Commission and Olivier Vanderhaeghen, spokesperson for Françoise Schepmans, Mayor of the Molenbeek Sint-Jans municipality.

Throughout the discussion, many issues concerning radicalisation and the youth were discussed, such as the task of the European Institutions in preventing the process of radicalisation, what major threats is Europe facing today and the powerful tool of social media.
